mr king parrot comes to visit November 23, 2009

Thank god its only 24 degrees today. Thats 20 degrees cooler than yesterday. We've had four days over 40 (thats over 100). Tells of a hot summer coming up. Already bush fires all over the state.

And yesterday this poor old King Parrot dropped by looking for water. Its the second time I've seen him and he's about the most exotic thing I've ever seen in our backyard. Besides myself of course.

No idea what he's doing around these parts. They usually hang in rainforest type areas and that I can assure you we are not.

Wonder if he's someones pet. Hmmm.

Anyway of course yesterday was the day a leak appeared in the bird bath and there was harldy any water in it. So of course then I went in and gave Daz a serve for being a slack arse and not fixing it immediately and that now the poor bird would probably die from heat stroke and it would be all his fault.

But I've dragged an old bird bath out and filled it so hopefully he'll come back.

Hopefully Betty won't try to eat it. Because she hates magpies, (don't we all). Doves are ok. Magpies are scum.

So here are some fairly crap shots of the beautiful boy. I didn't want to get too close and scare him off. He sounded exhausted. Those little strips of bluey green down his side are almost fluoro. (fluorescent for you non australians)

Amazing parrot – I love how he stands out against the blue fountain.

  2. cat Says:

He is lovely. And quite large as well. A nice visitor.

  3. Aubrey Says:

Reminds me of the ruby boy I see in a neighbor's (from work) outdoor aviary – he always come by to say hello when I walk by. How can someone not stop and find out what he has to say?

  4. cat Says:

This guy had a bit to say as well. I think he said – Man, its too hot, why haven't you got the damn fountain full. Hope he's ok.

  5. Shutterbug Says:

It would be so awesome to see a parrot in the backyard! Of course, between our typically cold temps in the winter and the army of feral cats that live in the neighborhood, I don't think it would last too long! I love the middle picture, where it looks like he's contemplating taking a dip. :o)

  6. cat Says:

Yes, he was trying to work out how to get to the dribble of water that was left in there. Usually its full and bubbling and would have been beautiful for him. If he comes back he'll see that I've put in an effort for him with the bird bath.

  7. L Says:

he is beautiful and looks rather overheated…. hopefully he'll be back to splash around in the bird bath

  8. brilliantly beautiful! have you seen him fly so you're sure his wings aren't clipped? that might help you figure out if he's someone's pet. how nice to see him out in your yard! and they're not crap shots at all. that tiny vein of yellow around his eye is lovely too.

  9. cat Says:

He looked very lethargic – he's quite big as well so just looked hot and heavy

  10. cat Says:

I saw him fly over our fence and onto the neighbours garage roof two doors down. Not sure what he'd be eating around here. He looks beautiful in flight.

  11. Rev Stan Says:

He's a beauty. Hope he comes back.

  12. Amy Says:

yes, magpie are scum. also i am jealous of the warm weather, it's freezing here in western washington state, and my bones hurt.

  13. cat Says:

lol, we are in magpie season at the moment – some areas in town you wouldn't walk in because they attack so violently
    I hate the cold weather

  14. cat Says:

I hope he does, but then there are so many cats in the neighbourhood I also hope he doesn't – would hate to see him caught

  15. Crush-Monkey Says:

Wow! Such great colors on him! : )

  16. cat Says:

as usual in the wild much more colourful than the female

  17. Kzinti Says:

    Magnificent. Simply beautiful.

  18. cat Says:

    he's a popular boy!
