I was wondering last night when, or even if, Elle McPherson is going to cut her long hair.
I was watching her on Top Model at the time. I don't just sit around thinking about Elle McPherson and her hair.
But it is luxurious and I did have a moment of envy as I grabbed a handful of my own hair that is currently in recovery from the razor treatment it received. But it still sits around my shoulders, and Elle and I are about the same age. And it is something I have pondered before.
At what age are you too old to have long hair? Or are you never too old. When I was younger I always thought that once you hit 50, long hair just had to go. But as I hit 40 and head towards 50, I'm changing my mind.
Ok, firstly (if thats a word), I refuse to do the perm. Even if its the purple perm. And I won't do the middle aged lady bob either. Oh, I'm not a fan of the grey bob. But I don't want to look like Heidi's grandma either, with a long tatty grey braid twisted into a bun. (I don't actually know Heidi's grandmother by the way, so she could have a crew cut for all I know). Which raises a good point. I've seen a few old ladies with really close cropped hair and they looked pretty funky. And I have seen a terrible long hairstyle on an old lady. Its grey and it hangs around her shoulders and its always a bit dirty and very thin on top.
So I don't know. I like my hair shoulder length, but up. Which makes me worry that I'll end up with some sort of bun style that I let loose at night and brush 100 times before I go to bed and let it float around my pillow. Softly. Which of course it won't because my hair has the texture of steel wool. But I'm sure they'll have invented something by then to fix it.
It's a quandry.

I believe you should have long hair for as long as you want. If anything is going to determine a radical style change, like length, I think it should be thinks like lifestyle (not enough time or interest to maintain it), extreme change in hair quality (thinning or changing texture), or the personal interest in trying something different.As you well know, even if you F it up, you can always grow it back again!ps: check Advanced Style for some inspiring choices in length, style, color, and accessories.
It depends on the hair doesn't it? If it is healthy, thickish, well styled, then it can look great, but straggly thin badly cut hair NOOOOOOO! I do hate pontytails on a middle aged woman, it seems to be that they haven't moved with the times. I think if you have long hair then you kind of have to keep dying it. It doesn't really work beyond collar length if it is grey. Whatever the style it has to be current, contemporary not left over from a previous era.
What is the age? I have thought about this a lot (and Elle wasn't even on TV), and I have no idea. I used to think that 30 was the cut off for all things young and modern. My landlord has waist-length red hair that she wears in a high ponytail on top of her head. I'd say she's in her late 50's. It's a bit much, then again, she is crazy… but I think that perceptions of age are changing – 40 is the new 30 and all – and as long as YOU are happy with whats up top, then that's OK.
Well I'm not thinking just yet – I'm thinking more when I'm sixty. And maybe it doesn't grow as fast then. maybe if you fuck it up – its fucked for good.
Oh yes, I call it The Rural Ponytail. Everyone around here has one. But then you see someone in the paper like Jane Goodall who has one (a grey one) and looks fantastic, even though she's running about the wild and wearing no makeup, so then you start thinking you can get away with it as well. And it seems to be so easy to end up with badly cut hair. Some hairdressers don't seem to have a clue. I mean I've taken photos of hairstyles to the hairdresser and left wondering if they even glanced at it.
Yes, I used to think 60 was ancient but now I'm 45 I think of 60 year olds as spring chickens. This guy we know had a heart attack and died on the weekend and Daz said – well he was 58!!!! lol.Well I have the thick part covered. It's just the style that suits bit thats a problem. I never like my hair, whatever style it is, whatever colour it is.
I've long had a goal to appear as (but not actually be) a crazy old woman. F'ed up hair will just enhance that image. I'll almost certainly go for crazy colors.
Maybe wigs are the go then – change it as you feel. That could be fun – freak a few people out.

When choosing hair length or style you should go by the same rules as you did twenty years before. Take into consideration thickness, is your hair wavy or straight…things like that. But bottom line, you can wear it any way you want.
Just earlier tonight I was mentioning my waist-length neon-pink wig. Maybe that's when I'll finally wear it!
Well it doesn't really mean anything except I worry too much about everything. And I can't really trust the twenty year rule. When I look back at photos of myself twenty years ago I always think – dear god, why didn't someone tell me how bad my hair looked!

Mine was about 32… though it wasn't entirely voluntary…. ;)I think long hair can look really good — but don't let it get all wiry and disheveled. In a young woman that can be alluring, in an older one it makes you look like a crazy-cat lady.
I have several hats, a pair of gloves, glasses, and lord knows what else – all leopard print. I definitely think a jumpsuit is a necessity. Thanks for the idea!
I'm sorry but I just don't know anything about women's hair. Except for one thing…when a lady says "Do you think this would look good on me (doesn't matter, hair color, blouse, what passes for shoes these days, whatever…)? Don't answer!!!! This I have learned through years of mistakes and I always end up thinking, geeez, whished I hadn't said that. I'm just a simple man, I like it long. Period. There's just something unnerving about a woman who asks if she should cut her hair. I never know what the hell I've done this time, which of course, is a rather constant state of affairs. I just don't know and that's my story and I'm going to stick with it.
Have it as long as you want for as long as you want! I had a short crop when I was 13 but got mistaken for a boy so grew my hair long. It's been getting shorter and shorter the older I get and I'd love to go the whole hog and have the short crop again the only thing that is stopping me is how high maintenance it would be. My current style I love but I have to use straighteners and now I'm back cycling to work and we are getting into summer it's not something I want to bother with but I don't know if shorter would be any different or whether I should grow it longer. Time to see my hairdresser I think.
Think it depends on the person. Some women in their 60s have long hair and it really works; one I'm thinking of in particular, it sooo works organically, it'd be weird if her hair were short.

I love mine short as well but as you say it takes a lot of work. People always think short hair is easy but its not. But then thats the problem with long hair – so easy just to pull back all the time. Especially now I'm running again. Tie it back and go for a run then can't be bothered with the whole washing drying thing so leave it up. And I think a long grey ponytail looks awful.
They're rare though – most go for a bob. And I really dislike bobs, especially on me. I'm yet to find a style I like on me.
I got a pixie cut recently. The only photos I could find which showed every angle were of Victoria Beckham – I felt quite strange showing that to a young girl and saying "I want this".

I meant that it is growing out a bit and still looks good. I'm swaying on my hair because of the wedding – if I want it longer I have to stop cutting it now.

Wbaby – you're bobbed too? The 'helmet' is not a flattering look on me, so I let it grow out, a bit – but I did just get it cut, and now it's a little past my earlobe.
And yes, unless you get a truly excellent cut – then the hair just falls into place – short styles require lots of work.

Yes, I'm bobbed too – though it looks more moppy than bobbed because it's thick, wavy and unruly. I've had umpteen haircuts, inc. the baby-bottom bald with one very long thin braid at one side and a tuft at front and back, a self-created style; surprised I wasn't mistaken for a Hare Krishna. I actually prefer my hair short but this cold wet climate dictates the style. I've successfully grown it long, i.e., just past shoulders, and it draws many compliments (because of the wave) but I don't give an F, it's a *pain in the butt* so I end up lopping it off. An endless loop of hair distress! If it weren't for the cold-cool climate (even in summer), I'd likely maintain it at the 5 o'clock shadow.
