When people think of Queensland (beautiful one day, perfect the next), they probably think beaches, coral reefs and theme parks. But there is another side to Queensland. Make sure you've got your water bottle with you.

QLD

Of course you can cross the border into New South Wales. How dry does that look. Some one had a crossing party by the look of the beer bottles lined up there. I have no idea what our tourism slogan is.

NSW

Or the good old Northern Territory. Whats their slogan. You'll never never know, if you never never go.

Thats my Nan there with her back to us in the green cardigan. So they were still travelling in their later years. These were taken in 1973 I believe.

Looks uninviting! They went on a bus tour with Bob & Thelma – isn't that Thelma she is talking to?

  2. Snowy Says:

The top one reminds me very much of the Queensland – N.T border near Camooweal, as I recall it in 1967. I was working in Mt Isa at the time. We took a run out to Camooweal just to see the border. No, we didn't have a lot to do in the Isa! My Sydney friend declared he'd seen as much of N.T. as he wanted to. He always was a bit of a wuss…

Very cool — reminds me of Southern California — beautiful coastal climate, but drive an hour over the coastal mountain range and you're in the (beautiful in its own way) desert.

yes, freaky thelma – there's one of bob and thelma on a camel, which was pretty funny and one of 'stupid bob' as mum called him trying to pat an emu

  5. cat Says:

Yes, we all tend to cling around the coastline here but it really is worth a trip inland. I think since the movie Australia they are trying to promote the 'outback' a bit more.

  6. cat Says:

yep, it's an interesting place here – lots of extremes

  7. cat Says:

lol – yes those photos always make me smile, people standing there looking at a sign in the middle of nowhere. They went to Tennant Creek and Cunnunurra that I've seen so far – Alice Springs and Darwin.

{shudder. cough cough. sweat sweat. shrivel up. shrivel up. die.} cannot stand the desert heat. i like the blue sky though. and the beer bottles. preferably filled and consumed while sitting in a snowdrift.

  9. LeendaDLL Says:

doh… I keep meaning to post the current AU tourism commercial running here in CA. It's actually pretty good.

  10. cat Says:

lots of wide open spaces or cities? Oh, is it that one where you all come over here and find yourselves?

  11. cat Says:

ha – not many snow drifts around here – and definitely not in these places – lots of stupid people seem to go out and get lost there though, wander about for days, not enough supplies

  12. Waterbaby Says:

oh brother. stupid is as stupid does.

  13. LeendaDLL Says:

Yeah, the "sometimes you gotta go for a walkabout" commercial. Longer version is better than the shortened one.

  14. Great photos. My late father in law is from inland Queensland (Julia Creek) and he and mother in law went on a big trip up there a few years ago. Would love to go up sometime. The huge distances are a bit offputting though (as with Western NSW which I am also keen to explore).

  15. cat Says:

They seem to have covered a lot of ground. I wouldn't be good as I am a terrible traveller by car. I've never been one to admire the scenery or the landscape so would get very bored. But I wouldn't mind doing a trip on The Ghan.

  16. Yes, that would be good. At least you can walk up and down on a train.

  17. cat Says:

    and go to the bar
