I found this photo of my father the other day. Here he is on the tractor doing a bit of crop spraying with some sort of home made set up by the look of it. Not a mask in sight. Or goggles. I suppose he was doing this before we were all born. Wonder we're not deformed in some hideous ways.

He's had to have a lot of skin cancers burnt off his face lately. Due to all those hours sitting on a tractor many years ago. We did eventually buy a tractor with a cabin when they came on the market. he hated it at first. Said he couldn't see anything. He used to drive along with the door open leaning out looking around. It had a tape deck in it and he knocked the box with all the tapes out the door then ran over it. He got used to it though. I think it had airconditioning. We thought it was pretty luxurious when we first saw it.

why is is driving over the crops side-ways?

I have no idea. Maybe Emjay knows, she did a fair bit of tractor driving.

    No hat, either.

Here I am ….. firstly I don't think this was a homemade spraying machine. I think he might have been turning – perhaps counting the rows before turning to go back down the row. The number of rows he went over would be determined by how many rows the spray was covering. It was worse when they sprayed by air and we kids (perhaps only us older ones) marked out the rows for the crop duster pilot! And it was DDT in those days!!!

I don't think any of us wore hats! Or sunscreen! What we didn't know then!

lol, I remember the plane, we used to stand at the end of the paddock. Little human markers. Did we hold something up?

  7. cat Says:

No, I don't ever remember him wearing a hat. And he'd sepnd all day out there.

  8. Emjay Says:

Yes – a target for the pilot! A piece of white cloth I think.

DDT?!? Well, I hope you're not planning to hatch any eggs soon. (isn't that the one that made shells too thin?)I had a friend who freaked out when he went to his parent's home, around 1990, and found a big container of however-many-years-old DDT in the garage!

    thats hilarious – bloody parents!

I think it was responsible for the thinning of crustaceans' shells. They also found some relationship to increased risk of cancer in humans – especially breast cancer.

yes, i was gonna say he was probably turning. the positions of his body, tractor and wheels all suggest it.
