Now I know this could be bordering on lightly obsessive, but, I went outside this morning to see if ugly little spiderman was still there after the storm last night and not only was he still there, he was having breakfast! And it wasn't just a little fly or bug, it was some kind of grasshopper thing. You can tell by its leg, even though it looks as if it's been wrapped up for a while somewhere gettin' nice and juicy. He got through it pretty quickly as well. I stood on a chair to watch him. Just wish I could get up higher than him or behind him though.
You can't see how it's working because I'm such a short arse that even on a ladder I can't get higher than him but you could see the hopper slowly going down. I love that little disc part of the spider on the underside. Looks like a little biscuit with a slice of caramel in the middle.
And this one just looks like a wierd stick sculpture.His legs look like sticks. He'd moved by now. Trying to get away from annoying camera person probably. That meal looks very ummm, pulpy.
And I finally saw the spider that lives in the web out the back. I've never seen him so I went out last night with the torch and there he was. Now he looks nasty. Don't like that yellow tinge. He has a similar looking body to stickman but not as prickly.

The yellowish spider appears to have the image of the Grinch on his back. Am I the only one who sees that?

Anyway, I just thought I'd step in and say that all manner of insects terrify me, but that didn't stop me from going to the Bug Fair last year and letting a tarantula crawl over my hands and a giant millipede run up my arm.
But the photos are very beautiful…and quite prehistoric.
I'm just in standard auto mode – all the functions on a camera are wasted on me. But I do believe I have a lot of optical zoom so I can get fairly good pics without being too close. I can't get too close to him due to the bush.I tried using macro on him but they weren't as good.
I can't remember what he looks like but I don't recognise him there – I see a kind of melting man face with a pointy chin – it's pretty damn symetrical though.
thanks – the top guy is very prehistoric looking. Don't fancy the idea of a millipede on the loose on me! Or a tarantula actually. Or a snake.
Wow….you really ought to submit those photos somewhere. Like National Geographic or something. Again, for as creepy as he is, those are great photos!!
thanks patricia – he's been a very interesting little fellow. I'm expecting a bird to come along and snap him up any day now. Not sure of the life span of a spider.
Somehow a spider dining upside down makes us humans appear inferior, we can't even drink our water hanging by our toes.
This post pretty much guarantees that my arachnaphobic wife will never visit your blog. Amazing pics, though.
my son is getting a little worried. He's an arachnaphobe as well and is not happy that this guy is not far from his bedroom window.
well not that I've tried. All the spiders seem to hang upside down – wonder why that is.

my guess is that the sticky hairs on their feet combined with instant webbing spun from their rears should they go into a free fall have something to do with it.
Your pictures are amazing. Sorry you have to stand on a ladder to find out how short you're stacked. Have you tried stilts? I'm just teasing you know…The angles are perfect the way they are and the composition is very pleasing when the subject tells the story. Nicely done, Cat! 🙂
thanks – yes, I need to carry around one of those little steps that kids have so they can reach things
