I don't know whats happening in the rest of the world, but there's a disturbing trend happening here in Australia.

FLORAL

And lots of it. If you want to buy clothes at the moment you will need to have a true love of all things floral. And a touch of nostalgia for the seventies.

Imagine this. A loose fitting, full body, black cotton catsuit type thing. Gathered at the ankles, sleeveless, with a drawstring waist. And covered in thousands of yellow and pink flowers. It could be yours.

I even saw some broderie anglaise. And dare I say……. cheesecloth dresses. And long dresses. Floor length. I guess they're ankle length but on me they would drag on the floor. I've only ever tried on two ankle length dresses and both times ended up laughing at the sight of myself in the mirror. I felt like I was playing dress up in my mothers wardrobe thirty years ago.

I did buy one floral shirt. Big floral, in blues. I said to the girl, do you have it in any other colours? and she said, yes, we have it in purple and orange. And I said, I think I already did that in the seventies thanks.

But I bought it because I need something to wear to a family function coming up. I said to Lizzie – and I can wear it with white shorts, or white pants or even blue jeans. None of which I actually own of course.

I think I'll be giving spring clothes shopping a miss thanks. I hope you lot that are a season ahead of us have something better planned for my summer wardrobe.

So whats the go.

Where's everyone going to piss off to then?

WordPress, Blogger or somewhere else?

That's when Vox takes it's final gasp I mean.

There has been talk by many of jumping ship, so I want to make sure I jump in the right direction. Because I can't swim.

Damn, my 'a' key doesn't work. I'll have to go back and fill them all in.

Miss Lizzie finally has her braces off. So life can resume for her and the orthodontist can add a new room to his holiday home in Venice. Or do whatever it is he does with all my money.

I have to say it took me a few days to get used to the teeth. I haven't seen them since October 2008 and they were kind of startling at first. Almost two years in braces!! Shudder at the thought. She tells me she has forgotten how to smile. But she was looking forward to eating some KFC without having to spend the half hour afterwards picking it out of her braces.

In what turned out to be even more thrilling news she got her P's yesterday. And she's bought herself a car. She's loving it. She went for about six drives last night.

At the moment she's down at the showground. She drove there and its only about 70 metres away.

running to the corner August 15, 2010

Today I ran 8kms in 47 minutes. Go me. My goal is to run 10kms in 60 minutes and then 50 minutes. Apparently this is what sorts out the runners from the joggers. Joggers I read, just jog about aimlessly.

I've been following this programme on a site called Time to Run. You can basically start from never having moved from the lounge and end up running sub 40 minute 10k's. And it all sort of happens so gradually that you don't even notice your pace or fitness getting better until you realise you can run 8 kms in 47 minutes.

There's a lot to think about when you're running. Head up, shoulders down, hands relaxed, hips forward, land on the ball of the foot.  I used to think so hard about it all that I'd almost fall over but now I just sort of let it happen. And anyway have you seen Paula Radcliffe run. She has the weirdest style with her head banging about all over the place yet she keeps winning marathons. I felt a bit like I was channeling her the other day.

I do my running on the treadmill because there's nowhere to run here. I've been around town looking but can't find a suitable track. This means I spend a lot of time watching music videos. Which has lead to me developing a strange crush on the lead singer of Gyroscope. I don't even know what his name is. But they have a new album out so I've seen a lot of them. And their music has a pretty good running pace.

For a while there I thought he might replace Tex in my affections.

But. Nah. Ain't gonna happen just yet.

Gotta love a man who can wear a pair of brown slacks

dunny games August 13, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — panthergirl @ 6:13 am

I always wonder about people who read books on the toilet. And when I'm at the library borrowing books I often wonder if they've been read on the toilet. It disturbs me more than a little. Because for one thing, there has to be about a hundred places in your house or yard that would be more pleasant places to sit and read than the dunny is. And the other thing is that if you have time to sit and read on the toilet, then you weren't ready to go. Or maybe you need to up the fibre intake a little.

But whatever, some people, for whatever reason, read on the toilet. I wasn't aware though that people played games on the toilet. I'm pretty sure that I never want to go to any ones house and see this set up beside the loo. I mean c'mon!!

And yes, you can buy it for $25.00

wash your hands August 11, 2010

I read in the local paper yesterday, that every year in the hospitals in our region, 70 people die of blood poisoning caused by staff not washing their hands.

That must be pretty disappointing. To die because some festy worker didn't wash their hands before touching your catheter or drip.

But the thing that really gets me when I read the results of these surveys is the amount of people who admit to not washing their hands. Why would you do that. I read one once about the number of workers in mall food halls who don't wash their hands after they go to the toilet before they prepare food. And I thought, why would you even say you didn't.

So it says in the paper that in 65% of cases hospital workers did wash their hands. But the prevention and control director would like to get that to 80%.

Now I know its probably just a crazy out there idea. But how about 100%.

Hospitals seem like really dangerous places.

Garlic Shoyuzuke August 10, 2010

I found out yesterday what happens when a bulb of garlic explodes in the microwave. Not a clove, a bulb. Basically what happens is you're left with an enormous smelly mess that you spend the afternoon cleaning up.

So, the garlic gaga goes on. I bought the bag of australian garlic because there was a suggestion to store them in olive oil. But when I did a bit of reseach I found out this is not recommended AT ALL because there's a very high risk of botulism.

The way to go seems to be to pickle them instead. Then I found this simple recipe that just uses soy sauce. And she said that since its such a pain in the arse peeling six bulbs of garlic, and easy way to skin them was to cut the tops off then put them in the microwave for three minutes. I wouldn't suggest this myself because I was out in the laundry after about two minutes when I heard it explode.

So peel all your garlic, I only used three bubs as they were enormous.
Have a jar sterilised and ready to go.

You need enough soy sauce to cover the cloves in the jar. Then just heat the soy sauce, put in the garlic, simmer for 5 minutes then put it in the jar and seal it up. Put it away in a dark cool place for two weeks.

Then after that you have tasty little garlic cloves to use in whatever or just snack on. And you have tasty soy sauce to use in your stir frys or dressings.

Room August 8, 2010

Two really good books in one week. It's almost too much to hope for. I'll have weeks of ordinary now I guess. I'm reading one thats just okay but it's set in Russia. And they have such ridiculously complicated names I can't pronounce. So I have to make up other names for them and then I never really know who's who.

But this book I loved is called Room. I've taken a photo of my cover because when I looked at the one on Amazon it wasn't as nice. Why is it that we always have better book covers here in Oz. Anyway I would have loved to have read it in one sitting but it took me three in the end. Started one night, woke up at 5am and read more then finished it off that afternoon. I knew I was going to love it as soon as I read the first sentence. I never buy or borrow a book without reading the first sentence then the back then running my hands over the cover.

If you see it lying about in your travels give it a read. I read another book by this author that I also enjoyed and it was totally totally different. I like it when authors do that. So many of them just seem to produce the same story time after time.

This is the blurb from Amazon.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough…not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, ROOM is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.
